Product Guide: CrossWave HydroSteam Professional

vacuum cleaner

Living within BISSELL’s renowned CrossWave range, the CrossWave HydroSteam Professional represents the next evolution in all-in-one floor cleaning. Proven to clean sticky messes up to 20% better than traditional hard floor cleaning, it combines powerful HydroSteam Technology with BISSELL’s multi-surface cleaning formula to vacuum, wash and steam simultaneously across sealed hard floors and low-pile area rugs.

Equally excellent at cleaning up muddy footprints or pet messes as juice spills or leaks, the HydroSteam Professional delivers a deeper, more hygienic clean – without the need for multiple tools or repeated passes. It’s designed for busy households that demand spotless results in less time, offering the cleaning power of three machines in one.

Key Features of the CrossWave HydroSteam Professional

The innovation that BISSELL is known for powers the CrossWave HydroSteam Professional, with HydroSteam Technology that combines hot steam with strong suction and scrubbing action to break down stubborn, sticky messes up to 20% more effectively than traditional hard floor cleaning. It’s the ideal solution for kitchens, bathrooms, and high-traffic areas where spills and grime build up quickly. With its all-in-one cleaning system, you can vacuum, wash and steam at the same time, removing dry debris, washing with a fresh BISSELL formula and sanitising floors, eliminating up to 99.9% of common household bacteria like Enterobacter aerogenes and Staphylococcus aureus.

Designed for both hygiene and convenience, the Two-Tank Technology keeps clean and dirty water separate so you’re always cleaning with a fresh mix, never reusing dirty water. The tangle-free brush roll reduces hair wrap and maintains consistent performance, even in homes with pets or long-haired family members. Its multi-surface versatility makes it safe and effective on sealed wood, laminate, tile, linoleum, rubber mats and pressed wood floors, while also refreshing low-pile area rugs to lift surface dirt and restore vibrancy.

To make cleaning easier than ever, the automatic self-cleaning cycle flushes out dirt, hair and residue from the brush roll and internal system, keeping the machine fresher for longer. You can also choose from three specialised cleaning modes – Hard Floor Mode for light everyday maintenance, SteamWash Mode for deep hygienic cleaning and Area Rug Mode to gently clean and revive rugs without overwetting. Together, these features make the HydroSteam Professional a complete, whole-home solution for spotless, sanitised floors.

How to Use the CrossWave HydroSteam Professional Step-by-Step

Step 1: Assembly

To set up the machine, insert the handle firmly into the top of the machine until it clicks into place. Slide the clean water tank into the back of the unit, and then wrap the power cord neatly around the Quick Release Cord Wrap. When ready to use, simply turn the cord wrap down to release the cord easily.

Step 2: Preparation

Before cleaning, vacuum or sweep up large debris. For heavily soiled areas, test steam on a small, inconspicuous patch to check for heat sensitivity.

Step 3: Filling the Formula Tank

Your CrossWave HydroSteam Professional is compatible with genuine BISSELL CrossWave cleaning solutions formulated for wet and vacuum hard floor cleaners. Using BISSELL-approved formulas ensures optimal performance and prevents potential damage.

  1. Remove the clean water tank from the back of the machine by lifting it upward.

  2. Unscrew and remove the cap to open the tank.

  3. Choose your preferred BISSELL cleaning formula, like the CrossWave Pet Pro OXY Multi-Surface Formula – you can scan the QR code on the product label or check out our formula guide for recommendations.

  4. Select the correct fill line:

    • Small Area Fill Line: For areas up to 27 m².

    • Large Area Fill Line: For areas up to 55 m².

Fill the tank with warm tap water (maximum 60°C) up to the selected line, then add the corresponding amount of formula. Do not use boiling water or heat the tank in the microwave.

  1. Replace and tighten the screw cap, then reinsert the tank securely into the back of the machine.

Step 4: Cleaning Your Floors

To clean your floors, plug the machine into a properly grounded outlet. Press the power button to turn the unit on. By default, it powers up in SteamWash Mode, but you can select your mode by pressing the mode button to switch between Hard Floor Mode, SteamWash Mode and Area Rug Mode. The selected mode will appear on the foot display. If you’re using SteamWash Mode, allow 30 seconds for the steam to heat. The “Steam Ready” light will illuminate when it is ready to use.

Then, start cleaning by reclining the handle to start the brush roll spinning. When the machine is upright, the brush roll will pause. Before cleaning, hold the spray trigger for about 10 seconds to wet the brush roll. You’ll see bubbles appear in the window when the solution is flowing – this is normal!

Hold the trigger to dispense formula (and steam if in SteamWash Mode) while moving the machine slowly back and forth to scrub and lift dirt. Release the trigger to stop dispensing solution and steam, then make several forward and backward passes to extract dirty water and help the floors dry faster.

Step 5: Sanitising Hard Floors

Use this mode on hard, nonporous surfaces for an added layer of hygiene.

Follow the cleaning steps above to remove surface dirt and debris. Hold the trigger to apply the solution to the floor, then allow it to remain visibly wet for five minutes. After the dwell time, release the trigger and make slow forward and backward passes to extract the solution and leave the floors sanitised and refreshed.

The CrossWave HydroSteam Professional is Perfect For…

It helps pet parents to have pets and a clean home at the same time, effortlessly tackling hair, paw prints, and odours, while parents can quickly remove sticky spills, food stains, and everyday messes from sealed hard floors. Allergy-sensitive households can win the fight against indoor allergens with steam sanitisation that helps eliminate common bacteria, promoting a healthier living environment.

By combining vacuuming, washing, and steaming in one device, the CrossWave HydroSteam Professional delivers professional-grade cleaning power and saves valuable time whenever it’s needed.

Maintenance & Care

Regular care ensures your CrossWave HydroSteam Professional delivers its best clean every time. After each use, take a few minutes to empty, rinse and dry key components to maintain strong suction, hygienic performance and long product life. Here are some maintenance tasks to stay on top of to keep your machine working at its best:

Changing the Brush Roll

Different cleaning tasks call for the right roll, like the all-purpose brush roll and the pet brush roll. To swap or replace your brush roll:

  1. Grab the front of the brush window and pull upward to remove.

  2. Remove the brush roll by pulling the side tab.

  3. Insert the brush roll by placing the end into the right side of the foot.

  4. Press the brush tab down until it locks into place.

  5. Reattach the brush roll window, aligning the tabs on both edges.

  6. Press the window down until it clicks securely into place.

Emptying the Dirty Water Tank

  1. Press the release button on top of the dirty water tank. Grab the front handle and pull the tank out.

  2. Hold the top of the tank near the sides of the filter and pull up to remove it. Detach the strainer stem and discard debris into the trash.

  3. Pour the dirty water into a utility sink or suitable wastewater receptacle, then rinse the tank thoroughly before reattaching.

Using the Clean Out Cycle

Use the Clean Out Cycle after each cleaning session to flush the internal pathways and brush roll. Make sure the dirty water tank is empty before starting, and keep the strainer and filter dry.

  1. Fill the clean tank with water and formula up to the Clean Out Fill Line. You can also add FreshStart formula to the Clean Out Tray for extra freshness.

  2. Plug the machine into a grounded outlet and place it on the tray. The Clean Out Cycle button will illuminate blue when ready.

  3. Press the Clean Out Cycle button to begin. For best performance, do not run the cycle more than twice per use.

After Cleaning Care

After each use, follow this process to clean the machine and keep it primed for peak performance:

  1. Remove the brush roll (see instructions above) and place it in the tray to dry. Check the steam bar for clogs and wipe the steam nozzle with a soft cloth.

  2. Wipe down the exterior of the machine – don’t rinse it under running water.

  3. Empty and clean the dirty water tank and strainer.

  4. Remove the filter from the lid, open the screen, and clear out any debris.

  5. Wash the filter with warm water and mild detergent after each use. Allow it to dry completely and replace it every 3 months.

  6. Rinse the underside of the tank cover to remove wet debris.

  7. Let all parts air dry for 24 hours before reassembling.

  8. Reinstall the brush roll, filter, strainer and tank lid.

  9. Insert the bottom of the tank first, then pivot the top into place until it clicks securely.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the CrossWave HydroSteam Professional differ from the other CrossWave machines?

In its exclusive SteamWash Mode, CrossWave HydroSteam Professional uses HydroSteam Technology to loosen and lift sticky or tough stuck-on messes up to 20% better than CrossWave models without HydroSteam Technology.

SteamWash Mode releases clean water, BISSELL formula, and steam (generated from the clean water and cleaning formula) to release stuck-on and sticky messes from the surface more efficiently. All other CrossWave models output water and cleaning formula only.

What floors can I use the CrossWave HydroSteam Professional on?

CrossWave HydroSteam has been thoroughly tested and proven to be safe for use on sealed hard floors - including sealed timber and hardwood, sealed laminate, tiles, polished concrete, vinyl, slate, low-pile area rugs, and more. If you can use a mop and bucket, spray mop, or steam mop on your floor without an issue, you can use a CrossWave.

CrossWave HydroSteam only outputs water when the trigger in the handle is pressed by the user, and only uses steam in SteamWash Mode. It's Hard Floor Mode and Area Rug Mode output water and formula only.

As with any new product for your cleaning regime, it is recommended to consult the care instructions or your flooring manufacturer beforehand and perform a test patch in a discreet area to ensure compatibility.

How do I remove the handle of my CrossWave HydroSteam Professional?

Remove the clean water tank from your machine. You will then see a round rubber circle. Please press that in with a pen and lift the handle off at the same time.

Can I use CrossWave HydroSteam Professional as a normal dry vacuum?

CrossWave HydoSteam isn't designed to be used solely as a dry vacuum. You can use suction only by simply not pressing the trigger for water, but this is more for control of the water output and to allow for dry passes to be performed if desired. For best performance, it is best to use to vacuum and wash the floor simultaneously.

When you turn Crosswave HydroSteam on, it starts in 'dry mode', and only outputs water when the trigger in the handle is pressed to activate 'wet mode'.

Our new CrossWave OmniForce Edge is the only CrossWave model designed for use as a dry vacuum.

Why has my BISSELL CrossWave left streaks on my floor?

Each home and floor type is different. Streaks can occur for a variety of reasons - from the technique used with the machine, to the type of flooring, to the amount of product built up from previous cleaning methods... Even to the amount of dirt on the floor, or whether the bottom of your machine is dirty or not. Here are some tips that may assist:

  1.   To prevent floors from streaking with Crosswave, make sure you are using the appropriate amount of formula in the tank. Our Multi-Surface Pet formula is 7x concentrate - use less of this formula than what's recommended in the User Manual or on the tank markings. Our Wood Floor Formula, Hard Floor Sanitise Formula, and Area Rug Formula are non-concenrates - so follow the guidelines on the tank for those. Some high-gloss floors respond better to the Hard Floor Sanitise Formula due to its higher alcohol content. You can also try using demineralised water - this is particularly helpful if you live in an area with hard water or tank water.

  2. Streaks can also occur if you’re applying too much water to the floor. Once you have completed your slow wet passes (pressing the trigger), ensure you repeat these slow passes using dry mode (releasing the trigger) to suction up excess water.

  3. Ensure you're moving Crosswave far slower than you would with a traditional vacuum - the slower you move the machine, the better the result you will have. Clean in slow straight lines back and forth where possible, and clean along the grain of the floor.

  4. We also suggest trying the machine with an alternative brush roll. Each floor is different, and some floors respond better to our Wood Floor Brush Roll. This brush roll is comprised solely of soft microfibre, which tends to leave a better finish on high-gloss floors.

  5. Always ensure the bottom of your machine is kept clean, the wheels are wiped down regularly, the filter is always kept clean and dry, and the machine is well maintained.

Why has my Crosswave lost suction?

The suction will shut off automatically when the dirt tank is full. Ensure the filter is washed regularly, and is 100% dry and clean from debris between uses. CrossWave filters should be changed every 3 - 4 months. Ensure your machine has no blockages and that the brush roll cover is on securely.

Does the Crosswave leave the floor dry or wet after cleaning?

If wet mode has been used (the trigger in the handle has been pressed), Crosswave will release water to mop the floor. It will be less wet compared to regular mopping, as the vacuum action sucks up excess water. Most floors will dry within a few minutes, and the more dry passes you do over your floor, the quicker the area will dry.

How often do I need to change my CrossWave filter and brush roll?

Replace your CrossWave filter once every 3 - 4 months. Replace your CrossWave brush roll once every six months, or as needed. Spare filters and brush rolls can be purchased from leading electrical retailers and the BISSELL website.

Can I use CrossWave to clean my carpets?

The Crosswave is primarily to be used on sealed hard floors and low-pile area rugs.

You can lightly refresh your low-pile carpets with Crosswave, but it isn't designed to be a carpet washer replacement or stand-alone dry vacuum replacement for carpets.

For deep carpet cleaning and stain removal, we suggest looking into our range of carpet washers.

Why can I see where the wheels of my Crosswave have been?

To avoid wheel marks, first ensure the wheels of your machine aren't dirty. Wipe them clean with a damp cloth from time to time to ensure you're not dragging dirt around. Cleaning in slow straight lines back and forth so that the brush roll is the last part to touch the area you're cleaning will avoid any wheel marks or wheel lines as you clean. It's a good idea to use the machine in the same manner you would normally mop - starting at the corner of the room furthest to the exit, and working your way back.

Why is the clean tank of my Crosswave leaking or not sitting in the machine properly?

Ensure you are only putting lukewarm tap water in the tank (not hot or boiling) along with CrossWave compatible formula. Failing to do so can warp your tank, and incompatible products can erode the tank seals. Ensure the two tank cap components (the collar that screws around the bottle opening, and the valve/grill insert) are clicked together securely - they can be separated, but need to be clicked together securely prior to being screwed back onto the tank. Check when screwing the cap back onto the tank that it isn't cross-threaded - if the threads aren't lined up properly, the tank will leak when turned upside down. If you have damaged your tank, you can order a new one from the BISSELL website.

What formula can I use with my CrossWave HydroSteam?

CrossWave HydroSteam is compatible with any BISSELL formula labelled for use in CrossWave machines. Do not use anything other than tap water mixed with BISSELL CrossWave formula, or plain tap water, in your machine.

Is CrossWave HydroSteam cordless?

No. Due to current limitations with battery technology, CrossWave HydroSteam is a corded machine to provide optimal suction, consistent steam temperature and adequate usable run time.

What makes CrossWave different to other hard floor cleaners on the market?

BISSELL invented and released the CrossWave multi-surface hard floor washer in 2016, meaning we're the most experienced brand in this category of cleaner. CrossWave is the first of its kind to truly vacuum, wash, and sanitise hard floors at the same time. Select CrossWave models can even refresh area rugs and low-pile carpets, making them a true multi-surface cleaning system. Imitators from other brands tend to just sweep the floor, are generally limited to cleaning hard floors only, do not feature BISSELL's patented tangle-free brush roll, and do not sanitise. We're so confident you will love your CrossWave, we offer a Money Back Guarantee with select models.
