How To Clean Your Kitchen

how to clean your kitchen

Have you noticed how a clean kitchen makes the whole house look a lot cleaner? Even when we aren’t able to deep clean our entire house, cleaning the kitchen goes a long way in ensuring that the whole house remains clean.

Your kitchen is the heart of your home. It is a place of both literal and figurative nourishment, so keeping it clean should be your topmost priority. If you want to achieve a spotless kitchen, this kitchen cleaning checklist will tell you everything you need to know, including how to clean your kitchen, what to clean and in what order.

So, let’s get started.

What it means to deep clean your kitchen

Tidying up your kitchen on a regular basis is good. But, if you want a clean kitchen that always looks and feels its best, you need to think about regular deep cleaning. When we say regular deep cleaning, we are referring to a kitchen cleaning routine that falls somewhere between an after-dinner clean-up and a full kitchen refresh. This type of deep cleaning is just enough to keep your kitchen looking spotless and fresh.

So, the question remains – how is a regular kitchen deep clean done?

You’ll find the answer to this question in the next section. It covers the step-by-step process of a kitchen deep cleaning routine that can be done every day, along with suggestions for the right cleaning products for the kitchen.

The Kitchen Cleaning Checklist:

1. Cleaning the kitchen counters

2. Cleaning your kitchen sink

3. Refrigerator clean up

4. Dust the higher areas

5. Wet cleaning

6. Clean the stove top

7. Clean smaller appliances

8. Countertops and lower cabinet cleaning

9. Clean any remaining surfaces

10. Empty your trash

11. Clean the floor

1. Cleaning the kitchen counters

The first thing you need to do is remove any items from the kitchen counters that don’t belong there. Whether it’s any leftover food packets, plates, open cookbooks, or even your straggling mail.

2. Cleaning your kitchen sink

Before you scrub the sink, soak in any items that need cleaning. For this, you can fill the sink with hot water along with some dish soap. Soak in the items (utensils, microwave turntable, dish rack), clean them, and keep them aside. Now it’s time to tackle the kitchen sink. Scrub all parts of the sink, including the faucet, soap dishes, etc. Use a detailed cleaning brush to get to the nooks and crannies. Finish it off by rinsing the sink with some hot water.

3. Refrigerator clean up

Work your way from top to bottom to clean all the shelves with a paper towel and an all-purpose cleaner. Throw away any leftovers, and leave the dirty containers in the sink to soak. Don’t forget to toss away any items that have expired to ensure a clean kitchen.

4. Dust the higher areas

Make sure that you dust the higher areas of the kitchen to knock dust and debris on the floor (this will be cleaned later). Start from the area above the sink and dust your way around the kitchen. Get the top of the cabinets, light fixtures, upper corners, etc.

5. Wet cleaning

After you’re done dusting, it’s time to do some wet cleaning. Use a damp and soapy cloth to wipe the exteriors of all your appliances, the upper cabinets, door handles, hooks, frames, etc. Next, take an all-purpose cleaner to spray the interiors of your microwave. Let it sit for a few minutes and wipe it with a fresh dry cloth.

6. Clean the stovetop

Spray the all-purpose cleaner on the stovetop and let it sit for a few minutes before wiping it off. If there are any stubborn stains on the stovetop, you can use a powdered scrub to ensure that it doesn’t scratch the surface. Wipe the stovetop with a fresh dry cloth and then use a steam cleaner like BISSELL's PowerFresh Slim or Steam Shot to remove the bacteria and built up grime.

7. Clean smaller appliances

Now, it’s time to clean the small appliances in your kitchen cleaning, like the toaster, coffee maker, stand mixer, etc. For this purpose, when considering how to clean your kitchen, it’s best to use a multi-surface or glass cleaner to wipe down the surface.

8. Countertops and lower cabinet cleaning

It's important to scrub your countertops with a cleaner formulated specifically for the purpose. Use small, circular motions to scrub it thoroughly. Now, use a damp cloth to wipe the lower cabinets and drawers.

9. Clean any remaining surfaces

Use a damp cloth to clean any remaining surfaces, like the front of the dishwasher, fridge doors, and oven exterior. Pay close attention to the edges and the handles. De-griming the tight spots can be difficult, so you can use a spatula wrapped in cloth or a soft toothbrush for reaching these areas.

10. Empty your trash and clean the garbage can

After you’ve thrown out your garbage, it’s a good time to clean your garbage can. You can use a disinfecting cloth for this purpose. Wipe the interior and exterior of the garbage can to clean it thoroughly.

11. Clean the floor

With the countertops and surfaces done, you can now clean any dust, dirt and crumbs that might’ve fallen on the floor. BISSELL has some great floor cleaners that can be used on hard kitchen floors, whether they’re made of tile, ceramic, hardwood, or laminate. With these multi surface wet and dry cleaners, you don’t have to use the traditional mop and bucket to clean the floors. You can cut down your kitchen cleaning time in half by vacuuming and washing at the same time. Consider steam cleaning the floor as well to ensure that almost all of the invisible bacteria is removed from the floor.

Et voila! Your kitchen cleaning is done. You can now go relax on your sofa and enjoy your spotlessly clean kitchen.
