Step-by-Step Guide to Using the Revolution HydroSteam

  1. Assemble

First, remove the clean tank from the upper body. Ensure the upper body is level with the lower body and tip the machine forward and slide the upper body into the lower body from the back. Next, insert the handle into the machine until it clicks into place. Finally, insert the clean tank into the machine until it clicks into place.

  1. Fill the Formula Tank

Refer to the BISSELL formula guide to select the appropriate cleaning solution for your task. Fill the tank with warm tap water (60°C MAX) and add the selected formula to the appropriate fill line. Be sure to screw the cap back on tightly before reinserting the tank into the machine.

  1. Select Mode and Start Cleaning

When cleaning, there are three options to choose from. Select the desired cleaning mode depending on your needs:

  • Steam Pretreat Mode to break down tough messes – loosens tough stains before removing them with SteamWash Max Clean mode. The brush rolls and vacuum motor will shut off in this mode.

  • SteamWash Max Clean Mode for deep cleaning – steam is present but not visible in this mode. The carpets will dry in about 8 hours.

  • Quick Dry Mode for when you need carpet to dry fast – only uses water and formula for a quick clean. The carpets will dry in about 30 minutes.

Plug the machine into a grounded outlet and press the power button to turn it on, and then press the spray trigger for 10 seconds to activate the steam. Press the mode button until you’ve selected your desired cleaning mode, then follow the instructions below to clean:

Steam Pretreat Mode

The preheat icon will blink until the heater is ready to make steam. Then, press the recline pedal to recline the machine. Pull the trigger to release steam and move the machine forward and back over the stain for 20 seconds. After the steam pretreats, press the mode button to clean the stain in SteamWash Max mode.

SteamWashMax Clean Mode

When the indicator light stays illuminated, SteamWashMax clean mode is ready to use. Press the recline pedal to recline the machine. Pull the trigger to dispense water, formula and steam, and while holding the trigger, make two “wet passes,” moving the machine forward and back across the carpet. Release the trigger and make “dry passes” by pushing the machine forward and back, at least two times, across the carpet or until the water can no longer be seen in the nozzle.

Quick Dry Mode

Press the recline pedal to recline the machine to use quick dry mode. Pull the trigger to dispense water and formula. While holding the trigger, make two “wet passes,” moving the machine forward and back across the carpet. Release the trigger and make “dry passes” by pushing the machine forward and back, at least two times, across the carpet or until the water can no longer be seen in the nozzle.

Use the Upholstery and Stain Tools

Attach your chosen tool to the hose for targeted stain removal or upholstery cleaning. Do this by lifting the accessory hose door on top of the foot on the front of the machine. Flip the door toward the machine to open. Insert the hose until it clicks into place. Be sure the coloured hose release clip is facing out, away from the machine, and then attach the tool to the end of the hose.

Using the 2-in-1 Upholstery Tool

The upholstery tool comes in two settings, wet and dry cleaning. Switch to the dry setting and turn the machine on to vacuum up debris from the carpet or upholstery. For wet cleaning, switch to the wet setting, press and hold the trigger to activate the spray, and release the trigger to suction up the stain.

Using the 3” Tool for Stains

For the targeted 3” tool, point the tool above the stain and press the spray trigger to release the cleaning solution. Then release the trigger and gently scrub the stain to lift the dirt.

BISSELL Revolution HydroSteam Care and Maintenance

All cleaning machines need their own care occasionally to keep them clean and functional. As the Revolution HydroSteam uses water, it needs special attention. Follow these instructions after cleaning or when appropriate.

Emptying the Dirty Water

When the tank is full, the float will shut off suction and emit a high-pitched sound indicating it is time to empty your tank. To empty the dirty water tank, release it by pressing down on the tank handle and tilting the tank toward you. Remove the tank, carry it to the disposal area and unlock it by rotating the handle back. Grab the lid in the recessed area on both sides and pull up to remove it. Empty dirty water into the utility sink.

Reinstall the lid and rotate the handle forward to lock it in place. Reinstall the tank by inserting the bottom first. Then, tilt the tank toward the machine and push the top in until it clicks into place.

Cleaning the Machine

Let the machine cool before touching it because the nozzle may be hot. Place your fingertips into the grips on both sides of the nozzle. Press the release buttons with your thumbs, rotate the nozzle to remove it and open the hose door. Rinse the nozzle with warm water and remove debris with the clean-out tool. Note that parts are not dishwasher or automatic washing machine safe.

If the brush roll chamber is dirty, clean it with a cloth. Check the steam bar for clogs. Wipe the underside of the steam bar with a wet towel or manually remove visible clogs if necessary, and let the nozzle dry before reassembling. Reinstall the nozzle by first lining up the tabs with the grooves of the foot. Rotate the nozzle back into place until you feel two clicks

Cleaning the 2-in-1 Upholstery Tool

To clean the 2-in-1 upholstery tool, first twist the dirt cup to open and empty it into the trash. Then, rinse the dirt cup thoroughly and let it dry completely before reinstalling it.

Using the Rinse and Storage Tray

There are 2 hooks on each side of the foot that hook under the tray. Press the tray down onto the foot. The water cup can be stored on the side of the tray. Place the machine on the tray and fill the rinse cup with fresh tap water to the fill line printed on the cup. Pour water into the tray and open the hose door on the foot.

With the hose tool door open, recline the machine and press the power button to turn the self-rinse ON. Let it run for 6-8 seconds to rinse brush rolls and close the hose tool door. Press the power button to turn it ON and run until all water is picked up. Repeat steps 3-4 until the foam is completely rinsed, then press the power button to turn the machine OFF.

Replacing Belts and Brush Rolls

Occasionally, you’ll need to replace the brush roll and brush roll belts for optimal functionality. To do this, unplug the machine and remove both tanks. While reclined, lay the machine on its front and remove the belt cover. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove three screws on the right panel and two screws on the upper panel. Then remove the brush roll assembly by unhooking the belt.

If the flat belt is broken, place a new belt around the red pulley by stretching the belt toward the back of the machine and around the metal shaft. If the brush roll belts or brush roll assembly is broken, replace it with a new brush roll assembly. Reinstall the brush roll assembly, making sure to loop the belt over the shaft and reinstall the belt cover.

Revolution HydroSteam FAQs

Which BISSELL formulas do I use in my machine?

The Revolution HydroSteam is compatible with most BISSELL formulas labelled for use with full-size upright carpet cleaners.

What is the BISSELL Pretreat Spray used for?

Pretreating is the first step in deep cleaning your carpets or fabric upholstery. For best results, particularly on set-in stains, use the pretreatment spray at least 15 minutes prior to using the machine. Pretreating beforehand loosens and mobilises embedded dirt, stains, and odours, allowing for optimal cleaning results.

Can I use BISSELL formulas labelled for use in portable carpet washers in my full-size upright carpet washer?

Yes. The low-foaming formulas designed for use in portable carpet washers can also be used in full-size upright machines. Formulas labelled for use in full-size upright carpet washers should not be used in portable machines.

How much formula should I put in my full-size upright BISSELL carpet washer?

The clean water tank of your machine has guidelines to follow for the water-to-formula ratios. As a general rule, it is approximately 60ml (1 cap) of formula and 120ml (2 caps) of Oxy Boost per full tank of warm tap water.

What types of carpet can the Revolution HydroSteam be used on?

The Revolution HydroSteam is suitable for use on most types of carpet and fabric upholstery. However, we strongly recommend checking the care instructions of your carpet/upholstery first to ensure compatibility, and performing a test patch in a discreet area. We do not recommend using our full-size upright carpet and upholstery washers on loop-pile/berber carpet, pure wool, silk, jute, viscose, leather, natural suede, or other materials sensitive to water and agitation.

Oxy Boost - do I need to use it?

We recommend adding Oxy Boost to your tank with your formula for best results on old stains, stubborn messes, and lighter-coloured fabrics or carpets.

Can I use the Revolution HydroSteam on hard floors?

No. The Revolution HydroSteam is designed for use on carpets, rugs, and fabric upholstery only. For hard floor cleaning, look into our CrossWave or steam mop range.

What is HydroSteam Technology?

HydroSteam Technology is BISSELL’s patented combination of steam, water and cleaning formula to remove tough, stuck-on messes on hard floors, carpets and upholstery. Only BISSELL has HydroSteam Technology across a family of products, including CrossWave, Revolution and SpotClean.

HydroSteam Technology makes it easier and faster to completely remove the worst stuck-on messes and set-in stains. The combination of steam, water and cleaning formula works to loosen and lift messes from a variety of surfaces.

Is it normal for the brushes in the floorhead to keep spinning while using the upholstery attachment?

Yes. The brushes are raised when the machine is parked upright and will continue to spin.
